Sticky Keto Sesame Chicken Wings

Tasty marinaded chicken wings – not sticky, just delicious and succulent. A perfect keto snack when you do not want too much for dinner.

This was super simple and really easy to make the marinade. I left the wings marinading in a glass tupperware container on the counter-top for 3 hours. Make sure you do not get tempted to save the marinade because it smells to die for but remember it has had raw chicken sitting in it for a long time. I did not make the tahini dip purely because I did not have any tahini. However I do not believe the wings required a dip, they were so flavorsome and moist.

The psychology of crunchy sesame seeds

Sesame seeds are a great source of nutrients like calcium, protein and zinc. Additionally, they have an irresistibly crunchy texture that makes them popular as a topping for dishes such as salads, stir-fries and noodles. But the psychology behind why sesame seeds are so attractive goes beyond their taste and nutrition. According to food experts, the crunchy texture of sesame seeds triggers a satisfying sensory experience that helps to reduce stress and create feelings of calmness. The nutty flavor of the seeds is also known to evoke positive emotions such as contentedness and pleasure. Studies have even suggested that people associate the distinctive aroma of sesame seeds with happy childhood memories. Meanwhile, the visual appeal of sesame seeds plays a role in its popularity too. The tiny black and white particles sprinkled liberally on dishes can create an attractive aesthetic that is pleasing to the eye. Furthermore, their small size makes them versatile enough to be used as decoration for various types of cuisine – from salads and sushi to desserts and other baked goods.

How is cold-pressed virgin sesame seed oil made?

Virgin cold pressed sesame oil is made by pressing the highest quality sesame seeds to extract their purest and most natural oil. The process begins with selecting the best quality organic sesame seeds, which are then washed and dried before being put through a special cold-pressing technique. Cold-pressing involves using mechanical presses that do not involve the use of extreme heat or chemicals, preserving the oil’s natural nutrients and flavor. This method also produces a higher yield of oil than other methods such as hot-pressing. After pressing, the sesame oil is filtered through a fine mesh to remove any impurities or solids before being packaged and ready for consumption. Packed with valuable vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, virgin cold pressed sesame oil is a nutritious and delicious addition to any dish. Its light nutty flavor adds depth and complexity to various dishes ranging from salads and stir-fries to dips and dressings.

Total Time3 Hours 40 Mins

Ingredients

  • 5 tbsp Sesame Seed Oil
  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos (I used soy sauce)
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1 inch ginger root, minced
  • 0.25 ground grey sea salt
  • Pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 lb chicken wings
  • Optional tahini dip: 1/4 cup water & 2 tbsp tahini/sesame paste
  • Toppings: 1/4 cup green onions diced, 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Place 3 tablespoons of the sesame oil, coconut aminos, vinegar, garlic, ginger, salt and cayenne pepper in a large container with a lid, and whisk to combine.
  2. Add chicken wings and seal with the lid. Set on the counter for 3 hours, or in the fridge overnight.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C) and set out your large cast iron pan, or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Reserving the marinade, place the chicken wings meaty side up on the prepared sheet.
  5. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and transfer to the preheated oven. Cook the chicken wings for 30 to 35 minutes, or until tops are golden.
  6. To prepare the tahini dip, 5 minutes before the wings are ready, transfer the reserved marinade to a small saucepan and add water, tahini, and the remaining 1 tablespoon of sesame oil.
  7. Cook on medium-low heat, whisking continually for 5 minutes, or until it has simmered for a minimum of 3 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and transfer to a clean plate. Sprinkle the chicken wings with green onions and sesame seeds, and serve alongside the tahini sauce.

What we think

“Absolutely wonderful. These wings are gorgeous, they aren’t sticky as I think you’d need sugar to make its sticky and we all now know that sugar is full of carbs. There were four servings here, so three wings each which on their own would not be enough to fill me up. Will and I shared it so had 6 wings each and we were full to the brim. A 5 out of 5.”
